Antique Glass Oil Lamps
|
Antique glass oil lamps are popular with many collectors because of their beauty and value. Not only that, but these lamps are even functional if you are a person who wants an antique that can actually be used as well as displayed. These lamps were used before the invention of electricity and can still function today in the event of a power outage. You can actually use a lamp that was once used to heat a colonial or Victorian home. There are a variety of styles and time periods from which you can choose when collecting oil lamps.
The Victorian time period was one when people wanted intricate designs and romantic touches like ornamental carvings and scrollwork. An oil lamp from this time period is going to be as beautiful as it is functional. You might see colored glass in many different shades combined with ornately molded iron. Colonial glassware was definitely more sparse in design and made to be functional. Colonial families didn't have time to care about things like a pretty design, but rather wanted an oil lamp that was sensible and useful. These lamps usually feature a simple design and clear glass.
In some areas such as New England whale oil lamps were commonly used. These glass lamps were created by companies like New England glass for burning whale oil. Another thing you may come across in your search for antique oil lamps are lamps featuring Depression-era and carnival glass. Carnival glass is the oldest and dates back to 1907. The distinguishing characteristic of this kind of glass is a metallic iridescent finish that shimmers in the light. Some old pieces of carnival glass actually contain radium salt, such as Radium Ware by the Millersburg Glass Company which was released in 1910.
If you're serious about collecting antique glass oil lamps, you need a good identification guide. There are quite a few titles that can be of use to the collector. Check out the following: Oil Lamps: The Kerosene Era in North America by Catherine Thuro, Oil Lamps II also by Catherine Thuro, A Guide to Sandwich Glass, Whale Oil Lamps and Accessories by Lloyd C. Nickerson and Discovering Oil Lamps by Cecil Meadows. These books will help familiarize you with different types of oil burning glass lamps.
